Problem-first technology: a better way to start a product

20254 min read

Successful digital products rarely begin with a technology stack. They begin with a clearly understood problem and the people it affects.

Resist the urge to start coding

It is tempting to begin a project by choosing a framework and opening an editor. But the most successful products are shaped by a different starting point: a precise understanding of the problem being solved, the people it affects and the context in which it occurs.

This is not to say technology is unimportant. It simply means technology is the answer to a question that should be asked first.

Understand before you build

The best products emerge from dialogue with the people who will use them. Who is struggling? What does their day look like? What would genuinely help?

Spending time on discovery, research and definition pays for itself many times over by preventing the cost of building the wrong thing.

A foundation for everything else

Once the problem is clear, every later decision, from architecture to experience to roadmap, becomes easier and more defensible. The product can be built incrementally, validated with real users, and refined with confidence.

Problem-first technology is not a slower way to build. Done well, it is the fastest path to something that actually works.

Let's explore a problem together.
